PPA39:KISS & Sneak Peek!

Pals Paper Arts is hosting a KISS (Keep it Simple, Sweetie!) challenge this week and I couldn't resist using a sneak peek set from the Summer Mini called Elements of Style!

I don't know how "kissable" this is, though. I tried to restrain myself from adding too much- honest! I guess I still got a bit carried away :).

You will definitely want to view the close-up of this card to find another sneak peek! I used a new folder from the Summer Mini called "Square Lattice". I love the texture it adds to the card.

Here are some tips:
  • I stamped a background on Whisper White using Jet Black Stazon. Then I ran it through my Big Shot with the Square Lattice die. The texture really reminds me of fabric.
  • My color scheme did remain pretty simple- lots of white, black, and touches of Real Red and Kraft (soon to be called Crumb Cake).
  • I snipped out the little humming bird and added it to the card with dimensionals. The sentiment square was also added with dimensionals so that I could run Real Red grosgrain underneath it.
My Summer Mini pre-order included a lot of other fun things that I hope to share with you soon! Being a demonstrator is so fun. If you have ever thought about joining and/or have any questions, feel free to email me any time.

Melon and Saffron Fifth Avenue Floral

You might have noticed that I have a fancy new badge on my left sidebar. That is because my Rose Card won last week as a Pals Paper Arts Artist Pick! I am so excited and flattered. You want a cool badge, too? All you have to do is Play at PPA and you could win it!

Today's card features my absolute favorite set that Stampin' Up! has available right now- Fifth Avenue Floral. You might have guessed that this one is my favorite with as many times as I have used it in my blog projects! I have the perfect excuse though- right now this is one of 4 sets that are 20% off as part of the Stampin' Up! Two-Step into Spring promotion!

Some tips:
  • I created my own DSP using some Whisper White and the Fifth Avenue Floral set. I used the masking technique so that the flowers would not overlap each other. Each flower was filled in with Melon Mambo or So Saffron ink. TIP: For a softer look, I opted to use a blender pen dipped in ink.
  • Frost White Shimmer Paint was applied all over using a sponge. This actually looks pretty amazing in person, but doesn't seem to photograph very well.
  • The sentiment, from With All My Heart, was inked using markers and stamped onto Whisper White.
  • The finishing touches include a Scallop Edge Border, silver brads (attached perfectly using the Mat Pack and Paper Piercing Tool), and some Melon Mambo Polka Dot Grosgrain. TIP: I used the back side of the ribbon so the polka dots wouldn't show.
I just put in a gigantic Stampin' Up! order that includes some great new items from the upcoming Summer Mini. The UPS man should be dropping it by on Friday so hopefully I will have some sneak peek items to show by early next week!

PPA37: Roses are Pink and Purple

Aren't these roses gorgeous!? I learned how to do them using Julie Williams tutorial- so easy to follow and the results are amazing. And since the challenge over at Pals Paper Arts is a theme challenge using flowers, it works perfectly!

Here are some tips:
  • I added a tiny bit of Frost White shimmer paint to the edges of some of the petals using a paint brush. I haven't decided if I like it better with or with out the extra shimmer, but I decided to just go with it. The shimmer pops in the photo more than in person (maybe a bit too much!).
  • This gorgeous Certainly Celery satin ribbon was tied in a "bow" and fastened using a Pewter Build-a-brad.
  • I used my Circle Scissor Plus and Scallop Circle Die (Big Shot) to create a fun backdrop for my sentiment and flowers.
  • The rose "recipe" calls for using the Extra Large Fancy Flower Punch, which I don't actually own. But... Stampin' Up! just released this as a digital download for My Digital Studio! In some ways I think it worked better because I was able to size the punch down to create smaller flowers (purple). In the future, however, I think I will go ahead and get the punch so I can easily mass produce flowers vs cutting them out by hand.
Well, I am off to try and make more flowers. I am thinking a bouquet. A Mother's Day Gift perhaps??? Hmm... off to create!

Remember to keep thinking about Stampin' Up!'s new Color Renovation Project. Keep in mind the retiring colors when ordering! Be sure to stock up on your favorites because after July 1 they will be gone!

Stampin' Up! Color Renovation!!!

Breaking News!!!!

Stampin' Up! has just announced a complete color renovation to take place this summer when the new catalog is rolled out. Many of your favorite In Colors will be returning and 5 new core colors will be released!!

On a bittersweet note, since all these new colors will now be part of the core collection, it seems only fitting that Stampin' Up! will be retiring some of the current colors. See the full list of colors at the end of this post. Be sure to start stocking up on ink, paper, and accessories now! After July these colors will no longer be available!

Without further adieu, here is the new color collection (click the image to enlarge):

Notice that the color families will be changing. Some colors have been grouped with different colors and the names have changed.

Brights Collection:
Regal Rose, Melon Mambo (current In Color), Rich Razzleberry (current In Color), Pacific Point (former In Color), Tempting Turquoise, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight (new!), Pumpkin Pie, Tangerine Tango (former In Color), Real Red

Click here to download the Fond Farewell Color Chart

Some important notes:
  • You'll notice that Neutrals has been added as a color collection (formerly called family) and Earth Elements has been eliminated (although many of the colors have been reorganized into different collections).
  • Kraft has been renamed Crumb Cake. This also means that this color will not only be available in card stock as before, but you will also be able to purchase the ink pad and marker!
  • A new stamp pad design will be phased in to reflect the changes in the color collections. These changes will take place over time and not all at once.
  • Don't stress if you have items that come in a set like the markers, watercolor crayons, pastels, etc. Stampin' Up! will be coming out with Color Kits to fill in those items with the new colors as well as some more new fun products!
  • Stampin' Up! will continue offering brand-new In Colors! This year we can expect 5 new colors and they will last 2 years, instead of one! This means that after this first year we will have 10 new In Colors at a time.

Remember that new colors probably mean new accessories too!

Big Shot Hair Pins- PPA35

Today at Pals Paper Arts we are hosting an Anything BUT a Card challenge! I decided that I wanted to do something using my Big Shot that doesn't even involve stamps or paper (gasp!). I have a bunch of random scraps of fabric (from the bargain bin at my local craft store), so I decided to make something with a couple of my favorite pieces: a pretty pink cotton, and a chocolate suede-like fabric.

Here are the steps used to create this project:
  • I simply ran the fabric through my Big Shot using the Flower Layers Bigz Die. TIP: I only put through two layers of fabric and I also added a piece of card stock to help it to cut through cleanly.
  • I layered several layers of the fabric to create each flower.
  • A crop-a-dile was used to punch a hole in the center of the flower.
  • A Pretty-in-Pink epoxy brad was used to hold all the layers of the flower.
  • A hair clip was attached to the back of each flower using some hot glue.
  • To distress the flowers and give them more dimension, I folded them up and tied a rubber band around them for several hours.
I WISH I had a little girl to give this to, but all the ones I know are either way too young or too old for this kind of look. But how about this- leave a comment about your favorite way to use the Big Shot and I will randomly choose a winner to send these to!

I hope you will play along at PPA! We have so much fun looking at all the projects that are received. This is probably a good time to mention that this is my last project as a designer for Pals Paper Arts. As many of you know, I recently started a new job and that combined with my family and Stampin' Up! workshops, has left me with little time to devout to this. I absolutely love designing inspiration samples for PPA and am sad to let it go, but I am hopeful that I will be able to create regularly as a participant!

PPA34: A Simple Sketch

Well... this last week we have been very busy potty training our 2 1/2 year old son, and let me tell you- it hasn't been a walk in the park. I needed a creative outlet away from the stress of training so this weeks Pals Paper Arts challenge was the perfect starting point.

Here are some tips for this card:
  • It was super easy to come up with this color palette- all the colors are found in the new Shades of Spring DSP (Occasions Mini).
  • I stamped the stem image from Great Friend just on the left side of the focal point. I was able to create some depth by repeatedly stamping without re-inking.
  • The butterflies were first stamped and snipped out and then I used a 2-way glue pen to apply some Dazzling Diamonds glitter.

Well hopefully this next week will work better with the "training". Wish me luck and be sure to play at PPA!

PPA33: Happy St. Patty's Day!

Ok, so I am not Irish, and I don't really celebrate St. Patrick's Day but I just couldn't resist. You see, at Pals Paper Arts we are hosting a color challenge using Garden Green, Certainly Celery, and Kraft. Hmm... so who can I give this card to?

A few things about this card:
  • The sentiment and clover images were created using My Digital Studio. I simply scaled back the size and printed it onto Whisper White card stock. The colors are spot on, don't you think?
  • I used the heart image from Hello Again and a stamp-a-ma-jig for the Certainly Celery clovers. Did you know that Hello Again is available for FREE as a Sale-a-bration item?! There is only about 2 1/2 weeks left in Sale-a-bration, so get your orders in now! Every $50 purchase earns a FREE item!
  • Textured Certainly Celery card stock slivers were used for stems.
  • I used the mini heart punch to pop out some Garden Green "leaves". Each one was scored down the center and attached to the card using mini glue dots. Green circle Rhinestone brads were used for the center of each clover.
  • A 2-way glue pen was used to apply the green glitter.

Be sure to submit your "green" creation at Pals Paper Arts!! Each new entry puts you in the running for some fabulous blog candy!

PPA32: Shades of Spring

There's a spring theme challenge going on over at
Pals Paper Arts this week, so this is what I came up with for some inspiration.

I used the new Shades of Spring designer series paper for this card.

Here are some tips:
  • I used my Big Shot and the Petals-a-plenty Embossing Folder with some Orchid Opulence to create the stripe down the center. I also used the the Big Shot to pop out a couple butterflies and the Certainly Celery Scallop circle.
  • The Circle Scissor Plus made for a quick and easy DSP circle for my scallop.
  • The new Scallop Trim and Scallop Corner punches made a fast and easy border for my sentiment.
  • Some Whisper White Organza and a new Pretty in Pink Epoxy brad were the finishing embellishments.
What do you think? Do you feel inspired to create something "spring themed"? If so, head over to PPA to see all the other inspiration cards and to enter your creation!

PPA31: An Inspiration

Aren't these colors awesome together? I was inspired by this photo from Pals Paper Arts (PPA31):

This card was a cinch to create:
  • For the background, I used a piece of Whisper White and attached several Little Leaves die cuts (using my Big Shot and the Sizzlit). I used Dotto Removable adhesive to attach them so that I could run the sheet through my Big Shot (again) for a custom texture (for full details on how to do this, please visit this post).
  • I flipped the sheet over and colored the raised leaves using a blender pen and some Old Olive ink.
  • The berries, from Berry Christmas, were added using Rose Red ink.
  • I used dimensionals to attach the bird and sentiment for some added interest.

PPA30: Keep it Simple Sweetie!

At Pals Paper Arts we are hosting a KISS Challenge. That is, Keep it Simple Sweetie!

I really struggle with holding back a bit for more simplistic cards. I tend to like a lot of layers and embellishments. For my card, I turned to the Dots & Designs Rub-on's for both the focal point and patterns.

Some tips for this card:
  • I use the same process for rub-ons that I do for Decor Elements. Basically this means that I rub the image while it is still attached to the backing sheet before applying it to the card stock. I also carefully peel the transfer sheet away from the rub-on at an angle to allow for an easier transfer.
  • I used a 2" square piece of a window sheet for applying the flower image. A slightly smaller piece of Very Vanilla was placed behind it to make it pop. I used some vintage brads to attach the window sheet so that I would not have any adhesive showing through.
Head over to Pals Paper Arts to submit your creation!

A Sketch Challenge at PPA!

At Pals Paper Arts we are hosting a sketch challenge!

My mother-in-laws birthday is coming up so I decided to use the sketch to create my card.

Here are some tips:
  • I used the birthday sentiment from the SAB set, Whimsical Words. I used SU markers to fill in each word a bit differently.
  • My big shot came in handy when creating this card. I used it along with a Texturz plate to create the Certainly Celery background, and I also used it with the Big Bold Cupcakes sizzlits.
  • Dazzling Diamonds glitter was applied with a 2-way glue pen to create frosting.
  • Pretties Kit flowers were dyed using Melon Mambo ink. Yellow glitter dots (non-SU) were used for the centers.
You will want to make sure to participate this week at PPA! We are giving away some great BLOG CANDY!!! To qualify all you need to do is participate.

MOJO Monday 125

This week I had a little extra time so I decided to take part in the Mojo Monday sketch challenge.

Our friends' little girl is turning one this weekend and this is the card I came up with for her. She is very girly-girl so purple and pink immediately came to mind!

Here are some tips:
  • I pretty much followed the sketch to a "T". The only variation was the tab just below the circle. I don't have the curly label punch, so to create a similar look, I ran some card stock through my big shot with one of the frames on the Matchbox Bigz XL die.
  • A little texture was added to the whisper white panel using a polka dot embossing folder and the big shot. To create the curve, I simply traced the edge of a container on the backside and snipped it out.
  • Both circles were created using the Circle Scissor Plus.
  • A little bit of Dazzling Diamonds glitter was used for frosting on the cupcakes.

Well off to finish my hubby's Valentine's day project! Hopefully I will have it ready to post in the next few days!

PPA28: Melon Mambo, Pretty in Pink, and Basic Black

I am excited to share today's card with you because it incorporates one of my favorite color combination's: pink and black! At Pals Paper Arts we are hosting a color challenge using Melon Mambo, Pretty in Pink, and Basic Black.

Here are some tips for this card:
  • I really love the Night and Day DSP (Holiday Mini Catalog) but I don't actually own it. I used My Digital Studio to print off the pattern onto some Whisper White card stock.
  • The flowers from Fifth Avenue Floral were black heat embossed and filled using a blender pen, Melon Mambo, and Pretty in Pink ink pads. Each flower was attached using dimensionals.
  • I used the backside of Melon Mambo Polka Dot Grosgrain and a Pink Pirouette button (retired- In Color 2008) to add some final touches.
I hope you will also play along at PPA!

PPA27: A Theme Challenge

This week at Pals Paper Arts we are hosting a theme challenge: to use snowflakes!! I will admit that I had a hard time getting the creative ball rolling. We haven't had much of a winter here in Spokane (not that I am complaining- by any means!). Lucky for me, it has felt much more like March!

Here are some tips for my card:
  • I started with a Perfect Plum textured card base. I created my own texture pattern by punching some Jumbo snowflakes out of scrap paper and using Dotto removable adhesive to secure them how I wanted to the card. Next I ran everything through my big shot to dry emboss the snowflakes. This is the sandwich I came up with starting from the bottom: Multipurpose platform (tab 1), cutting pad, card stock (with snowflakes facing down), silicone rubber, texturz impressions pad, and finally an extra piece of card stock.
  • The rest of the card was pretty simple. I used the new Scallop Trim punch and coordinating corner punch to create a mat out of Brushed Silver.
  • One large snowflake and several smaller "snowflakes" were added. TIP: To create the small snowflakes-or stars...- I simply cut out just the center of the jumbo snowflake.
  • A little ribbon and some bling tie it all together.
Make sure you head over to Pals Paper Arts to play along, too!

Woo Hoo! I finally got My Digital Studio!

I have been waiting on purchasing My Digital Studio (MDS- 118108) for waaaay too long! I finally received my copy today and couldn't be more impressed.

This is my first project- I realize it is quite simple, but I still wanted to share. I am still feeling my way around the software (there is so much to play with!). But being a beginner, this project took less than 5 minutes to create. Not too shabby.

Stampin' Up! offers professional printing services for cards, scrapbook pages, etc. I printed this one off using my home printer and matted it onto some Pumpkin Pie (below). The colors were a pretty close match, although not perfect. SU worked very closely with the printing vendor to ensure that the colors would be exact to SU specifications, so I definitely see the upside to using the service.

Anyway, if you have any questions about MDS, feel free to ask!

PPA26: Anything BUT a Card!

For this weeks Anything BUT a Card Challenge at Pals Paper Arts, I decided to create a custom gift bag using the Suede Paper technique and some Sending Love Specialty DSP.

To create the bag, I simply used an old gift bag that I peeled apart for a template. Here is a basic tutorial in case you don't have one on hand.
  • I cut two 12"x12" sheets of DSP down to 8"x12", being sure to save the 4"x12" to be used as the sides of the bag.
  • Score the larger pieces horizontally 4" from the bottom to create the bottom of the bag.
  • For the sides, you will also score the bag horizontally 4" up from the bottom.
  • Next you will make 3 vertical score lines on each of the 4"x12" pieces: one at 1/2", 2", and 3 1/2".
  • If you do not wish to have the ability to collapse the bag, then you are done scoring. If you would like to be able to collapse the bag, then score another horizontal line at 6" on just ONE of the 8"x12" pieces, and on both of the 4"x12" pieces. You will also want to score a triangle shape on the side pieces with the top point at the cross of the middle and 6" line, down to the 4" line (I hope this makes sense... perhaps a template would have been a better idea- I promise one soon!)
  • I used sticky strip to hold it all together, and within about 10 minutes I had a complete bag.
  • I attached some 5/8" Chocolate Chip Satin ribbon to some Whisper White card stock (the bottom received a Scallop Trim border) using more Sticky Strip. I did this for each side of the bag.
  • For the "suede" flowers, I simply ran card stock through my Big Shot with the Flower Layers die. Then I crinkled the flowers up as much as I could to weaken the fibers. After a short time you will begin to see the layers of the card stock- simply peel them apart to reveal a suede-like texture inside. TIP: If you are careful, you can get two suede flowers from one piece of card stock!
  • I used a needle and thread to sew the flower layers together and add some clear beads in the center.
Put on your creative thinking caps and join in for this weeks challenge at PPA! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Personal note: As of today, I started working a part-time job during the week. I am excited about this new endeavor and equally excited that since it is only part-time it will allow me to still be home with our son (and any future children) for the most part. While I simply love my Stampin' business, I may not be able to keep up with blogging- at least for a little while. It is still my intention to be a part of the PPA Design team so you can always expect a project on Thursday's, but in some cases that may be the only day that you will see a post for the week. Thank you to all my readers! I appreciate each and every comment that I receive and love that I get to share my love of paper crafting with you all!

PPA25: An Inspiration Challenge

Pal's Paper Arts is hosting an Inspiration Challenge this week featuring this photo:

For my card, I was inspired by the overall color scheme and white chocolate design.
Here are some tips:
  • To create the background for the card, I used the Swirls Scribbles Sizzlit and my Big Shot with Very Vanilla. They were attached to some Chocolate Chip textured card stock.
  • The sentiment, from the SAB set Whimsical Words, was inked up using SU Markers, stamped onto Very Vanilla and cropped using the 1 3/4" circle punch.
  • A tiny heart was punched (new Occasions Mini punch) from Sending Love DSP and attached using dimensionals.
  • To create the border around the circle, I first punched a 1"x8" piece of Real Red using the Eyelet border punch. Then I ran the strip through my paper crimper. Lastly, the border was attached to the back of the circle with plenty of snail adhesive. I wish I could say that I came up with this idea myself, but I actually learned it from this post.
  • Some final touches include some Chocolate Chip satin ribbon and a Real Red Scallop Trim border.
You wont want to skip playing at PPA this week because we are offering some awesome BLOG CANDY!!! All you have to do is play to qualify!

You're Never More than a Thought Away

I finally got some new SU products in the mail today and I immediately had to use them! So much fun stuff...

The inspiration for this card came from this post on SCS.

Here are some tips:
  • I used a polka dot embossing folder and my Big Shot for the Pretty in Pink background. Be sure to check the Occasions Mini for the new SU Polka Dot Embossing folder.
  • Sending Love Specialty DSP came next. Every sheet has glitter!
  • The sentiment, from Whimsical Words (SAB), was stamped onto Very Vanilla and trimmed out using the new Scallop Trim Border (Occasions Mini) and Scallop Trim Corner (SAB) punches.
  • The flower images, from With All My Heart, were stamped directly on the Very Vanilla as well as onto a scrap piece. They were trimmed out and added using dimensionals and Sending Love Epoxy Brads (new!). Some glitter glue (non-su) was added for a little something extra.
  • Isn't this ribbon amazing? It is the new 5/8" Satin ribbon in the Occasions Mini. It is available in 9 colors (Chocolate Chip used here).
Do you have copies of the Occasions Mini and Sale-a-bration brochure? If not, email me and I will send you one of each for free!
